CATCHES FOR THE SEASON 2012

(Catch Returns)

Two kinds of report were obtained:

 

1) CATCH RETURN CARDS- All 88 anglers reporting

 

O From 422 permits sold/distributed, only 87 cards (20.8%) were returned on time. and acceptable. [1 reporting angler did not fish]

 

O These anglers caught 1719 brown trout, 2 salmon (9.5 and 5lb, both below Haddington) and 44 sea trout (of which 31 were released and the best two were 9.5 and 7.25 lb).

 

O Total fish catches varied from 0 - 412 [median catch = 8 fish]

 

O Best brown was:- 0 for 20 anglers, 0-1/2 lb for 6 , -1 lb for 18, 1- 2 lb for 29 and >2 lb for 6 .

[Those catching: median weight = 1 lb]

 

O 10 anglers reported 21 sightings of otters; 1 mink was seen.

 

2) LOGBOOKS 12 anglers only

O A subset of 12 anglers (Committee members) kept a detailed diary;

8 of 12 did not fish in April (high rainfall?)

 

O 9 had fished also in 2011: there was no consistent change in catch.

O A total of 621 trout, 12smolts and 1 sea trout (4lb) were caught in 161 trips to the river.
